Hornby Steam

Post by ahardy »

Hi all.

I know there have been threads in the past the have talked about the live steam locos from Hornby but I was wondering if anyone has now bought one and what they think of them? I now have two, Silver Link and Flying Scotsman and I am very impressed with them!

I've A3 The White Knight, and it's fantastic, although I'm not very impressed with the Black 5.

Doubt there's much chance of anything that small since the mechanism just about takes a 4-6-2 tender loco to it's limit. Getting anough water into a tank loco for a decent running session would be a big problem, never mind trying to condense the boiler, valve gear and cylinders to such a small scale.

Think they can do anything with a tender, so things like Black 5s or LMS / SR Pacifics are possible among others. Sounds good. I've only seen them once or twice at exhibitions and they are very good. :D

They could do an auto tank (either 64XX or 14XX) with a water tank in the carriage.

It might be with their mechanism, but i've seen some absolutely miniscule 0-4-0 narrow guage 009 live steam loco's that run for quite a while at some exhibitions, they are absolutely outstanding. The guy will modify quite a lot of different loco's but for his system, size is not a problem :)

I've heard they may be making a BR 9F, LMS Coronation (the streamlined version) and Merchant navy locos next for live steam.

If they make a 9F I might have to break from form and actually buy one of those things :)

Just thinking about this from a technical viewpoint (no, don't groan!) I reckon that the older models that have been replaced will be first in line for the 'upgrade' to live steam running.

Hornby recently re-tooled the A4 and the A3 because of the need to modify the moulds for the live steam model, thus producing super detailed versions for the conventional electric market and required bodies for the live steam versions.

They have already re-tooled the streamlined Duchess, therefore it seems highly likely that they could use the old bodyshell moulds to produce a live steam version of it. Similarly they can now do the same with the Britannia, as that has been re-tooled this year.

Now, the 9F - I think a lot of people would like to see this done as a live steam model, but at the moment the technology is too bulky I think to be hidden inside the body of this model. Maybe in future years, with more R&D, this will be possible, but at the moment I doubt they will be releasing one. Pity :(

Regards,

Dan

it will be a shame if they dont make the 9F live steam because i think it would sell well, plus they stopped making the electric 9F so a new updated version wouldnt go a miss.

TBH they gotta go some to beat the bachmann one, dad's got the modelzone special edition weathered version and it truly is out of this world.
