Good question that.....
I would've said Bachmann until hornby came up with their stunning new Class 31 & 50 models and now the new 08 is a whole lot better I believe..
So..at the moment it's Hornby for Loco's....just!!! although I do like Baccy's 25, 37, 40 & 55's even though there's a few flaws...
Baccy definatly for coaches & wagons...
Heljan are OK but their 47's seem so delicate, I haven't received one without some sort of damage to it in transit... lets hope hornby give their 47 a new lease of life...
It if were to choose a favourite not based on the above I'd go for Bachmann as they've done a great 25, IMO 37 & 40
Cheers,

Well I've got 3 Bachmann 20's that can pull 10 bogies up a 1/35 incline, a 37 that can pull about 9 bogies up the same incline, a Deltic that can pull 9 bogies up the incline, 3 08's that can pull 5/6 bogies up the incline, a 66 that can pull 11 bogies up the incline and a standard 4 tank that can pull 6 bogies up the incline. I can't find any problem in that. That's probably strength in scale, never mind scale speed!Frellis wrote:Bachmann-
Most locos can't handle 3 yes that's right 3 bogies up an incline.
As for new Hornby diesels, you can't even slowly shunt them on a diesel shed with a feedback controller, they just fly away about a metre in 1 second, before you know it's crashed into something (not that I've done that of course......yet). Bachmann, Heljan and Lima stock are perfect for slow shunting on sheds etc.. It's like Hornby stuff has a sudden power surge before it starts moving!

Bachmann - every time
I have a BIG collection of locos (not many coaches - no room!) on a 60ft layout, and I mostly run Bachmann due to sheer reliability, eg I have 2 4MT's and 2 Standard 5's.
At one point I had 2 Q1's, bith numbered 33037, as I bought one at Warley and then won Hornby's competition and got a second one!

Sorry to bring this up
I like Bachmann as they run smother & are nicely detailed, but I still like Hornby (classic name) as the new stuff is great, but are a bit gerky.
Live Steam dosen't atract me as it is no longer a Model but a real engine.

I've found that Bachmann trains are a lot smoother, more reliable, better detail and they seem more solid and well put together. Quite a few Bachmann trains have working head lights and working red tail lights that work in direction of travel. Overall they are better value for money.
I've had many problems with Hornby trains and none with Bachmann trains, however I do still have a Hornby class 155 (which is very fragile) and a class 08.
