My girlfriend brought me a hornby Evening Star train set from M&S, which includes a 9F, 3 MK1 coaches, an oval of track, two sidings and a controller.
Am very pleased with the above, however, to avoid the cardinal sin of running a 9F with a short train (3 or 4 coaches), I am going to need a lot of space for a layout. What would be the authentic length of a 9-F hauled passenger working and how much layout space will I need.
Cheers
Jon

We tend to run them with 7 or 8 coaches on our layout in Gainsborough, and it looks right - but, in real life, between 10 and 15 wouldn't be unreasonable!

I think massive is a fair description

Can't claim to be an expert myself! In the real world, they wouldn't expect a signalman to allocate suitbale locos to trains...

I wouldn't have thought so either, lol.
