The skill with vegetation is judging when to stop so you get a nice balance of coverage and performance. I'm in a similar situation with my route. A new update is available for download. Major changes include the addition of grade crossing signals. I still have texture work to do, plus some adjustments to the model, but they're coming along nicely. :)

After mirroring, try creating a new box object afterward and attaching the mirrored part to it. Delete the box polys and the mirrored part will retain the properties of the box.

I have a similar situation on my route, but used tunnel decals to "cut" a hole along the canal's path. I didn't need to alter the terrain beyond track and roads. :)

The easiest method - at least for me - is to edit the display names of the common assets I'll be using for the blocks, usually adding a '0' (zero) preceding the name, so they show at the top of the asst list.
