Exactly so, both machines have one thing in common, they used a valve gear which only their builders used.

Ben, That's excactly what it is! The nearer home clue was to do with the fact that Kitson built a great many such engines, dressed up with full bodywork for tramways of all gauges, and they ran in many towns and cities in the UK. That is a definite move in the right direction; this loco is rather older, but fundamentally the same as the Irish engine, same builder. It is a little smaller, but the structure on the top is not a roof, it wouldn't keep the rain out, or the sun off.

There is certainly resemblance to the Rotterdam Steam Tramway engines, but mechanically it is very closely related to something much nearer home.

The buffer texture was something I saw at work and just took a picture of while it was there. It was a stainless steel flange blanking plate which had been skimmed on a lathe to give the classic quadrant appearance. Here are both the current machines together

The 0-4-2 has advanced quite a lot, and might be recognisable, though as with the Webb compound the loco could be identified from the first shot.
