If your CD does not support booting - some dont (especially older ones) then visit http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm There are links there back to Microsoft to download the software to make the boot disks. On the other hand, if the machine is too old to boot from CD you probably need a new machi...

What I do whenever I get a warning like that is to paste a key phrase from the message plus the work 'hoax' into google, and I nearly always get a result. Real virus warnings will always be specific e.g. 'NACHI-WORM' virusrather than 'This email contains a really bad virus', will say who the warning...

I have been using a Microsoft SideWinder Pro Game pad for some years now. (Sadly no longer made.) Les The original Sidewinder Pro is the best PC Game Pad ever made IMHO. There were many Sideinder Game Pads released over the years, each more cheaply made than the last. The good news is that the orig...

21" Monitors
There have been a few threads recently covering high-end kit for Train Sim, so I though I's add my 2p worth on something you can do on a more limited budget. One thing you may have failed to notice is how cheap second-hand 21" CRT monitors have become. I bought a 4 year old 21" monitor through ebay ...

Tony I think we've established that memory (as long as you have 256Mb plus ) is not a main determining factor for Trainsim performance. Processor is not a huge issue as anything 2gb plus is probably going to be OK. An up to date graphics card with 128MB or more should be fine. Add the biggest, faste...

MSTS1 is getting a bit long in the tooth now and doesn't fully support the DirectX 8 and DirectX9 features that are a major sales point for the newer cars. I haven't run any benchmarks, but I would guess that as long as you hava a GeForce 3(ish) or better card with 128MB of RAM or more , you would be...

On the community development issue, it seems unlikey that the expertise is out there to build a cutting-edge 3d engine from the ground up as a spare-time project, but it would be interesting to see if there is any way that some of the next generation of 3D engines that provde an SDK for development...

Someone was saying earlier that Microsoft may withdraw TrainSim, but I think it is more likely that it will simply fade away from a full releaseto a budget release , to a 4.99 release and so on. When it gets down to the three for a tenner rack in Game I'll probably stockpile a few copies for a rainy...

It is possible that the cancellation was to do with a breakdown in relations between Kuju and Microsoft, and a feeling by MS that what they had taken back from Kuju simply wasn't suitable for picking up by someone else rather than thinking there was no money in the Train Sim franchise. It doesn't ne...

To answer an earlier post about video sizes, if you capture video from a mini-DV camcorder you will need about 2GB free hard disk space for every 5 minutes of video you intend to capture. This is because video is typically captured uncompressed. When outputting it using video studio or similar you c...

Video files use up loads of space and bandwidth, especially if the wrong codecs are used. They also need server performance to be good to keep up, so the free hosting packages tend not to be too keen.(Understandable IMHO) The cost of paid hosting is coming down all the time though, so it may be bett...

Garry When I ran Windows 98 I found that all kinds of strange and not so wonderful things would start happening every 12 months or so, but would usually go away when I reinstalled Win98. If you can afford ityou really should consider XP. Your PC is well up to the task, and you'll spend much less tim...
