Thanks for that. I was aware it was going to be replaced soon, but didn't know any real details. LENNON - talk about building an acronym around its final result! (A tiny thing I know, but it bugs me!) Any chance on giving us a summary of the new system's basic principles and how it differs to ORCATS?

It's all done by a quite odd system - really rather strange I think that the private companies accepted it. It's called ORCATS. (No idea what it stands for). Basically, it distributes the fare paid among the operators that could be used for a particular journey. 9% goes to the operator or other comp...

See http://www.thedps.co.uk. Sad really.

Hopefully the DPS's disastrous year for their own railtours this year will make some people wake up and next years' should be more full.

(OT PS: anyone managed the little challenge in my sig yet?)

Yes I think they are correct, but the 4000 mbf figure is for Virgin's HSTs. Don't forget that they've spent just about b*llocks all on maintainence over the past year or so on them (it's just business, it would make no sense to maintain them well if they're being got rid of soon). GNER, FGW and MML ...

Nobody knows to be honest. I am led to believe the next services due for Electrostar introduction are the Arun Valley trains from Victoria to Bognor, Portsmouth (and sometimes Littlehampton/Chichester etc) - XX:02 and XX:32 from Victoria off peak. Good news for me: these are Redhill's 'fast' trains ...

Not just the 'kids', it would seem.

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but this seems to me just a hash of generalisations and inaccurate 'popular opinion'.

Anyway, straying off topic. Apologies.

In the September 2003 issue of Railnews. They say work starts on £30m upgrade between Banbury North and Leamington Spa, 20 miles will be resignalled. The work will require a number of track possions, incuding several weekends between Feb and April 2004. It is scheduled for completion by early summ...

I doubt very much that there are gonna be any more trains north of Banbury - the Banbury-Leamington stretch is running at just about full capacity (and if I remember correctly, a resignalling programme has just been put off).

I am begining to wonder if its got something to do with the fact that the under 30s dont seem to be able to get through a day without some form of chemical assistance I.E, canabis, extacy, heroin, uppers, downers, speed. Remember that the strict rules about alcohol and drugs on the railway did not just ...

Re HST2: Basically, so far this is just hot air and vague plans. It is almost universally agreed that HST is the one of the best trains ever to run on our system, but, now nearing 30 years old, has had its day. Therefore a new inter-city high speed train is required to take its place. The general id...

Course the answer would have been to transfer a great deal of the voyagers to Trans-pennine express, where they would have be absolutely ideal. Their tilting, high power and 125mph limit would have been very handy on that route. It ranges from Urban area with frequent stops, to long stretch of 90-1...

The first 220s entered public service in May 2001, IIRC. It may have been slightly earlier, but if my memory serves I first sampled one in early June.

If the line, or any other LGV(UK) were to be built, it would be to the French LGV specifications (large loading gauge, extended 300kph running, rollercoaster gradients etc) and would of course be electrified.

Just like the CTRL.
