It was clearly sturdily built to survive 13-odd years of very heavy use; though part of the credit must go to GNER for their excellent cleaning and mainainance regime. Only now ...

The only serious choice: http://fahrplan.oebb.at/bin/oebb.w02/query.exe/el It's the Deutsche Bahn timetable website, which covers the whole of Europe, in its English (text only) format. Simple to use, comprehensive, sensible, and (at least in text-only) lightning fast. I generally use the NRT book t...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/3169284.stm Nigh time for the refurb too. Looking forward to the stock shortages while it happens, though! Although to GNER's credit, the 91/1 programme was done very efficiently indeed, so well done to them for that. I look forward to trying out the 'new' (BBC) tr...

Most (newer) trains - particularly multiple units - are painted under contract by various suppliers. A painted train is then given a 'warranty' by that contractor. Any painting by the TOC - be it small jobs over little bits, or painting of doors for that matter, invalidates that warranty. Hence the ...

Virgin ordered their mixed fleet knowing what lines were to be TASS - fitted (on the XC routes). These were only ever going to be the WCML north of the West Mids (as part of the WC upgrade), and Oxford - Banbury. On these sections, and these sections only, the tilting Voyagers would be able to run a...

I was on the first ever fare-paying run of a Pendolino - 390010 on the twenty-something of July 2002. Birmingham International to Piccadilly, calling at New Street only. There are many things that could be said... Windows - initially they appear too small. One wonders why? TGVs have much larger wind...
