Have you tried uploading the picture to another server, i use http://www.photobucket.com. I haven't had any problems with it yet

It's cause it breaks the avator rules, probably too big(file size) or too large(screen space). It needs to be 100x100pixels or less, with a maximum size of 10kb

You can make it smaller using paint (i'm told there is a way) and then uploading it.
