Decapod - nice one, but how do I decompress (and recompress?) the s. files?

OMG:

You have set your Jubilee power parameters some way ahead of the real thing. It'll do an average 55mph without even trying from Settle to Ribblehead with a 365 tons load, which I gather was about the max loading for a 5XP on the S&C. Is this not a bit too frisky?

Alan.

Thanks, I already have your data from an earlier post. I've been using it as a benchmark but it would be nice to have numbers for other locos and routes.

Steam performance data

I'd like to benchmark locos with revised eng file data from the physics forum. Does anybody have any detailed steam loco performance data for the S&C or other routes in MSTS? Times and speeds plus fuel/water consumption and loadings if available. I already have the KX-Peterboro-KX data for the A3 po...

Water consumption per mile should vary with a number of factors, but not boiler capacity. I assume that MaxWaterMass represents the boiler capacity in lb of water and therefore should not affect water consumption. If you reduce this figure it may seem you are using more water since you will need to ...

Updated video card drivers have cured it. Thanks.

Installing UTC

If you are an existing Trainz user, check out the Trainz Technical Forum stickies before installing V1.5 UTC. There is important info not included with the software regarding installation and content despatcher. I followed the Installation Guides there and had no problems. http://www.auran.com/train...

I thought the 2 cyl set was at the wrong speed too until I heard the real thing. The Black 5 has 2 cylinders and 4 chuffs per wheel rotation rather than the incorrect 1 chuff on the default sounds.

Hear a recording of the real thing at:

LSWR D15

Thanks to Richard Osborne for the excellent LSWR D15 model - at last something to pull his LSWR rolling stock! There are some non-critical issues with the eng file. Richard, I've sent you some suggested changes and hopefully you and the physics experts can give it the realistic performance it deserv...

I've found this data for a large number of locos in the loco database of Bryan Attewell's Steam Simulator, listed under 'Adhesive Mass'.

Adhesion

There is an interesting new thread on this subject at http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID5/5355.html This proposes a way to calculate correct adhesion settings from prototype data, but it requires knowledge of the loco weight carried by the drivers. I have this data for most GWR locos courtes...

Rick, I hope you'll reconsider and stay on line. As recent threads illustrate, your practical experience with steam is invaluable and I hope you'll continue to make it available to the MSTS community.

Rick, adjusted wheel radii like these are used to provide the correct driver rotation speed using higher animation rates. But since radius is also a parameter in the steam usage formula, this will presumably result in an incorrect (ie too high) steam usage rate - hence my earlier post. In such cases...

Optimum Settings

I have a fast PC - 2GHz Pentium 4 with 512Mba and a GeForce4 Ti4400 using DirectX - and my Trainz setup is the latest SP3 version. But I'm getting slow frame rates with sliders at anything close to the max settings. Can anyone advise optimum settings?
