The 442s are needed as they are the only long-distance express passenger stock available to SWT. The 444s aren't the same, and could probably be viewed as inferior for longer journeys (such as Waterloo-Weymouth). That's why a 444/1 is needed, basically stripping out of the two seats behind the buff...

That’s a disgraceful way to handle fare-paying passengers; sometimes the lack of information passed on to the passenger is terrible. Who knows where the line of communication in your case broke down, you get the impression someone got the call requesting a bus and was about to go home so just did...
