Ellerman Lines

I was in the NRM and in the absence of my favourite loco (Duchess of Hamilton) my attentions turned to Ellerman Lines - what a fine loco that must have been before it was sectioned. I read on the placard that it was withdrawn in 1966 and not actually sectioned until 1976. Did it spend 1966-1976 in p...

I agree with Hercules, I'm personally very sorry that the forum has gone. There are plenty of forums which focus on modern traction, but not enough on steam.

I personally feel that the NRM should be concentrating on engines unique to the national network. Duchess of Hamilton has been on the mainline loads, however there is another duchess out at the mo so there is no need to have two running. Truro, Scotsman, and Arrow are unique engines in the preservat...

Actually, you'd be surprised. One thing I didn't realise is that they turn the scotsman in the great hall every morning before it does its' York-Scarborough runs. They shunt it across the car park and through the shutter type doors I went to the railway museum quite early one morning and saw this. I...

92212 is defo going main line. It has been fitted with TPWS and is currently undergoing boiler tests in order to satisfy its' insurers. Ironically, it is likely that the loco will be restricted to 45 MPH on the mainline, with the possibility of going up to 50 or 60 once she has proven herself. Altho...

I was talking to one of the guides at the NRM who said that most of Evening Star was practically brand new and at the beginning of its life. The major thing stopping her running is boiler certification and flangeless drive wheels.

Virgin Class 57s hauling Voyagers and Pendos

While at Birmingham New Street yesterday I saw a Virgin class 57 hauling a Pendolino through on what appeared to be a scheduled service as it was stopping to pick up passengers and then carried on. This got me wondering how fast a class 57 is allowed to haul a failed Pendo or Voyager, whether or not...

I am very saddened to hear about this further accident. An absolute tragedy. I am going to be (hopefully) visiting the railway over my birthday weekend, it looks amazing. It is disgusting that two engine drivers have lost their lives over the past year due to such thoughtlessness and carelessness on...

I've posted a thread in the Railway Photography Forum with some pics I took of the Hastings set going through Lincoln.

"Thumper" DMU Special to Lincoln

Just thought I'd put a few pics up of the Hastings DMU which came through Lincoln on Saturday 7th May 2005. I'd never seen one of these trains before so it was a pretty interesting experience for me, the power cars were like half loco/half dmu. really strange. Ther working wasn't strictly prototypic...

I do generally tend to keep an eye out on all the current mags. Normally buy a few each month and read the rest at WHSmith. Nothing whatsoever about 92212 going mainline has been mentioned in ages. Surely the owners must want to get it running some revenue earning tours to pay for the TPWS.

A few questions about the steam scene

Hi, I've been wondering for some time what is happening to 92212. I went to the NRM cab it day last weekend and was told that when 92212 does make it out onto Network Rail it will only be allowed on secondary routes which have not yet been modernised and still have old point work (compatible with th...

I went to Paris a few weeks ago. The metro system was amazing. Could get anywhere in Paris.

One thing which puzzled me was that some of the trains actually had rubber tyres on them!

I can only assume that this was to improve adhesion in order to provide better accelleration.

That noise sounds incredibly familiar.

I remember early last year, while waiting for a train at Newark Northgate, I heard a very powerful and distinctive engine chugging noise and when I looked round I noticed that it was a 66. Must have been the one of the two engines you mentioned.

Not being from an engineering background, I am curious as to what would happen if someone steamed up a loco which has been out of action for a while, but retired in working order - ie Duchess of Hamilton or Evening Star. I assume that these locos were kept in tip-top condition while running and woul...
