handrails
One trick I've used is to make any rails visible in the head-out view with more sections. American diesels use a job lot per loco! I lost 80 polys from one model. On the other side it doesn't matter so much - 4 or 5 sides smoothed looks fine. BTW I've found that 3 sides won't smooth very convincingl...

rivets
Darkangel,
Pretty well as fadedglory describes - it's all an illusion.
Try some of the flightsim sites - the best I've found for rivets & layers is:-
http://www.aluminumcloud.com/skinning.htm
There are others, the combat sim sites have more tutorials.

tutorial good & bad news
Bit of a eureka! During my rambling last night I found a tutorial to make a loco in Gmax. It's very similar to one I've just done for TSM & was uploaded at exactly the same time. There seem to be two versions , in PDF at:- http://www.eurotrainsim.de/tutorial/001.htm in HTM at:- http://www.vmbollig.d...

The tutorials have been uploaded to the steam4me site - not just http://www.steam4me which is an American retailer. The site is:- http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/ Go to the page anyway; Yuri's gathered in some extremely interesting tips & tutorials on all manner of MSTS topics...

FG, Hate to mention them again but "the other place" seems to have threads which go further into techie stuff. I haven't yet had the confidence to dive into .s files. Worth a search - let us all know what you find. Hopefully the next upgrade of TSM will take note of this sort of query. regards Richa...

textures
I'm fortunate then - no hair to pull out! Have you tried loading an imported TSM model - one off the Abacus site? Might start to isolate your problem. Is your problem with the textures themselves. Are they in the right format - not that I can remember what that should be - check the help files. How ...

I've got half a feeling there was a thread on train-sim about this. If I remember someone managed to get a bell on the Train Artisan ESE.
Might be worth a search.

joining parts
FG, I'd always thought MSTS didn't see parts - just vertices & points. On the thread on "the other place" re. specular lighting it's obvious that part names are used in the .s file. I haven't sussed how to look at an .s file so I can't comment. I've never joined parts into lumps myself & have had no...

joining parts
TSM always takes ALL of the properties of the last part added. If you're canny it can be of use, the texture, parent, colour & animation properties carry over to the joined part. Don't want to plug the tutorial unduly but sequence of joining together is covered - in the rods section. Don't understan...

locking up
Bigvern d/l version 1.1. There are a couple of differences in exporting but it's an improvement. I've found that Abacus updates are well worth having - they don't update until they've made a noticeable improvement. Have a look at the tutorial pt1 which I uploaded the other day - exporting is covered...

specular lighting
I don't think it can be done within TSM.
There's a thread running at train-sim about specular lighting - seems you've got to break into the .s file.

crazy trams
Are you using the default .rot file in TSM?
If so scrap it - it's nonsense.
Other than that you must have applied a rotation to the wrong part. The main part should stay in place - I'd expect the wheels or bogies to leap about.
More info please.

I completely agree with all of the points made so far. We're preaching to the converted though. I've gone into all manner of forums - usually they've cropped up during a Google search - the first thing I look for is a search facility - saves hours. Could the original post be made into a sticky & put...

texture wrapping
You've only got 3 options - try them all.
I must admit I don't use wrapping much - only for very minor parts.
You have much more control texturing from side/top/front axes.
I think wrapping's also a leftover from FSDS.
