I discovered though that it will minimise if you press the 'windows function key' It usually between the ctrl & alt key on the bottom left. It should have the MS Windows logo on it.

I woudn't do that. It is a default loco and belongs to Kuju/Microsoft. You could get into deep water if you amended and posted it on a website. Also converters are not particularly looked upon kindly as they can be used in the wrong hands to rip off other peoples work.

If I can work it out I don't mind having a go at a cab. My attempts so far though haven't been that successful. Is there any notes/tips available?

Here are a couple of images of the progress so far with the 72xx. The 42xx I am doing is in similar condition. Still some shape work and a far bit of texture work to do. I am trying to get a reasonable representation of the later loco green. At the moment it seems to come out too dark or too bright....

it sounds like you have some poly surfices reversed so that they face inwards. You can alter the orientation of individual polys by selecting Poly mode and use the right and left arrow keys to highlight the poly thats casuing trouble. It should be easy to spot since in poly mode there is a tell-tale...
