I found a file over on trainsim.com called engmod20.zip, which looked hopeful. But it doesn't include sound as an alterable parameter.
<Sigh>. We'll just have to continue doing it all one at a time.

Yes of course - the number of cylinders is specified in the .eng file.

Thank you Mr Williamson - these sounds are superb!
Just one thing, I don't know which engines have two or three cylinders, so I'm applying them to all my favourites at random.
