You do need the original version of the East Coast Mainline for the one off the Steam workshop to work.
On the DP simulation web site there are tips on what to do if you have problems with the route + requirements for the upgrade on the work shop.

There is a class 47 DRS on the DP Simulation web site, sorry can't help with the Class 37.

I would recommend WoodHead route.
Steam/Electric. Lots of goods yards. sometimes challenging drives. good scenery.
