I'm not 100% sure as I've never used them but if lens flares are just added as child objects to a loco blueprint then removing the reference to them should get rid of them.

The 7400 had smaller wheels and a higher boiler pressure to allow it to pull heavier loads up steeper slopes so it's a good choice. It wasn't auto-fitted either so was more suited to freight duties. Either of the 5700 or 8750's are good choices as well... there's a reason they built over 850 of them...
