A last point, I would not worry about anything above 2048 x say 1280 given the confined space of most cabs getting decent images that would have an effective resolution above that is from my expierence near impossible.

Re: High resolution Cabviews
Thanks for the reply, it is most welcome........................ I understand the above longiron but a number of points come to mind, in no particular order, 1: As this is a sim and not real life you do not get any feed back from the machine so the instruments become much more important and how the ...

Re: Removing reliance on MSTS default route data...
I very much sympathise with dklghtley here as I find the situation about copyright within the Train Sim community to be incomprehensible particularly from my expirence as a developer within the Linux community, but this problem can be solved.................................. As to the view that copy...

Thank you, I am going to get on it directly. All the graphics work is done on my Samsung 305T (30 inch 2560x1600) unfortunately it chose to go faulty a few days before christmas, still under warrany though. As Samsung does not recommence here in AUS until January the 14th development work is on hold.

Re: Removing reliance on MSTS default route data...
If I understand Lindsay correctly, the replacements should be free of copyright. I agree, the last thing OR needs is to be stifled by over - protective copyright. Surely we can be generous enough to give a few models freely? Shame on us if not, especially as the OR team are ensuring the future of o...

Re: Removing reliance on MSTS default route data...
It may not be obvious what I am saying but if the project gets under way I am sure others will contribute, but if no one starts it no one will ever get to contribute. You may also wish to remember what is known as "The 10 /90 rule of volunteer organisations", that is 10 percent of the people do 90 p...

Re: Removing reliance on MSTS default route data...
Now I come from the Linux world, Linux being an opensource version of unix almost completely developed by volunteers from around the world. The way OS projects work in this world is an individual starts a project, when development reaches a critcal stage others will come on board and help. I think y...

Re: High resolution Cabviews
Thanks, I have an older version of tgatool which definitely does not work, did not realise RR did the conversions will give that a go.
May try AceIT, this apparently though is a front end to Tgatool, so one would need a version of the latter program that handled the larger sizes.

High resolution Cabviews
Probably jumping the gun a bit here but............................... I have been paying around with some high resolution cabviews but I am unable to get tgatool to convert a 2048x2048 tga file to an ace file, the conversion actual proceeds but the output is jibberish even when viewed with tgatool....

Re: Removing reliance on MSTS default route data...
Just a thought, I am just getting my hand in with "Blender" and with this its is trivially easy to save the blank texture files (I assume this is the same with other programs) so a shape and a texture can easily be done by different people or another done at a latter time this assumes the blank text...

Re: Removing reliance on MSTS default route data...
Just a minor point first, I THINK in OR if it cannot find the install path for MSTS it can be specified. For openrails to be come really open it will require all items provided by MSTS to be replaced with freely distributable items. So a project like you suggest MUST be put in hand eventually and co...

Thank's for informative post Lindsay the information helped allot,I hope the post didn't reflect any kind of negativity,it's just interesting (to me)anyway. Good luck with your program. Did not think the post was negative only not to clear, so thought an explanation was in order. Always worth remem...

Re: Open Rails New Update #5
A possible explanation of terms which I hope may clear up the issue, I hope. In OpenGL shaders refers to a particular type of programming for the graphics subsystem that allows full use of the gpu's many processor sub units NOT to the way it calculates the way light and colour reflect off a surface....

Re: THAT SPEED / DISTANCE THING.....
This problem is I believe caused by the shape of earth is a slightly flattened sphere, that is the diameter at the poles is somewhat less than the diameter at the equater (however you spell it :( ) and this is VERY difficult to model in a short period of time. Where as MSTS almost certainly uses a f...

Re: About plans
Hello Sanyix, The Open Rails team has implemented sounds in the stereo format, including compatibility with MSTSBin sounds. The team does plan to eventually include 3D cabs and new controllers. Further down the line we plan to have a new RE. I will let other members of the team address the other po...
