Marker lights v Headlights Until the advent of high-intensity headlights in the 1980s, there were nothing more than marker lights, to warn track crews of the approach of a train. High-Intensity headlights are probably better, you can certainly see new trains like Voyagers coming from much further aw...

HS-2 will be a DEMU/EDMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit/Electro-Diesel Multiple Unit), depending on version (current plans are for 2 versions, diesel and electro-diesel). HS-2 will have a 2.5MW-2.7MW (about 3000hp) 'power car' at each end, with the motors under the coaches, and connected by a high-v...

Err, and has been for the last 4 years... Well, there was Proof House Jn in 2000, Euston that same year, er, Ledburn last year, Stafford-Wolves last year, Stoke-on-Trent right now, and a bucket load of other track replacements. This is not news, the SRA has just published another strategy. The green...

You mean National Bus Company green. The NBC - basically all the UK's bus companies - divided regionally, and was broken up in the early 80s. They used two schemes, based on what previous operators used - either Green or Red, and the double-N symbol still carried by most National Express coaches. I'...

But surely - a silent HST is a crime against humanity! One of the MML 43s had a battery problem, meaning it couldn't be shut down (it was a south-end one as well, making a fun time for StP's roof occupants). I believe official policy is to shut down the bufferstop-end power car, The country end powe...

Follow up on DB crash It appears there was a signalling failure. The driver of one train was authorised to pass onto the single track section before the other train had cleared the section (they were due to pass at a station). The cause is 'Human Error' by the signaller. Probably just a regrettable ...

Yet ANOTHER preventable disaster. Had ATP been fitted..... The Belgian JT42 crash was, I beleive the fault of the DMU SPAD-ing. I mentioned it in the Spanish crash thread. The Spanish crash appears to be the fault of a train SPAD-ing. This crash, I'd guess, is the fault of a train SPAD-ing. This rai...

If feel that we're now in a Great Western phase, what with Highworth, Deltic2002's Bridgewater-Swindon route, the Paddington-Penzance route and all. Going a bit further than Bridgwater, I'm going to Exeter! 42 miles further on than Bridgwater. 8) My apologies! I would like to ask which way you inte...

Horgy, are you going to do the *rare* 43001, complete with 'f' on the horn grille? Need pics? - just look at the on-train safety card on an FGW HST. BTW good model. If feel that we're now in a Great Western phase, what with Highworth, Deltic2002's Bridgewater-Swindon route, the Paddington-Penzance r...

A few of the CT 3-car 158s are kicking round. 159001's burner is at Crewe Works (the other two cars are idle at Salisbury, with 1703??s other coach last I looked), along with the part of 156409 which got smashed last year (the other coach is working with a 153). '409 should be out soon. On the subje...

Yes. Technically known as the Coradia 1000, they can only work in multiple within class and with 175s. Therefore, how about sending them to GW?

Even if you don't like the idea of HS-2, it's a good thing, because it's clever enough to have the dual-mode electro-diesel capability as so finely exemplified by Class 73/74s, but on 25kV. It'll also have enough power to match electric trains in performance terms. You say HSTs are good for another ...

Interesting thing i noticed. In the first shot of the two HST's. Look at the difference in livery design. FGW still deciding on their livery? Probably, FGW seems to like livery changes (are they owned by Dulux? ;)) Have you considered the option that they're just trying to find what looks best? Or ...
