Re: Classes 420 (8DIG) and 482 (8MIG)

The former would've been in NSE livery and the latter ran in Blue and Grey :)

Re: I found a Leaflet about the Networker 471 (from early 1990s)

Thanks, that 471 thing is quite interesting. They seriously weren't going to build them with 3+2 seating in Standard surely? That said, be a darn sight more comfortable than a 375/9 :-?

Re: Two questions about DMU's

The Irish DMU sounds like one of the early GNR(I) railcars, probably Railcar 'F' or 'G' by your description. Check out Chapter 2 of Diesel Dawn by Colm Flanagan.

Re: ....commuters experience first day of high-speed rail travel

Pre- high speed, South eastern ran the limited stop service from Victoria, calling at Bromley, Rochester, Chatham, Rainham, Sittingbourne, and I assume as far as Faversham. To travel to Sittingbourne from London took 1 hour. The new high speed service does it in between 54 minutes and 1 hour 1 minu...

Re: ....commuters experience first day of high-speed rail travel

The problem with the southeastern high speed service is that it's only really good for people who live off lines radiating from Ashford. That seems to be the natural hub of the domestic high speed services, so it begs the question: why run services to Faversham? The portion of the journey spent on t...

Re: Classes 201 to 207 - Livery Details

I have both books and they're both good for different reasons. Michael Welch's book is good for colour illustrations, livery details and interiors, whereas the BR Fleet Survey is useful for technical information. You should be able to pick up a copy of the BR Fleet Survey 9 from any good secondhand ...

Re: coach amenities

The first Mk2 coaches also had steam heating, but were fitted with electric heating from when they were built. The first use of ETH was in the 60s. Aside from the first 20 Class 47s which did had specific ETH generators, ETH current in diesels was tapped off the main generator was subsequent loss of...

Re: First Long Train Journey that you remember

Not exactly a long journey and I'd certainly had longer train journeys before then, but I have vivid memories of when I was about 6, travelling from Colchester to Chelmsford in a 6-aside compartment of a 302 with blue and green moquette. Ahh 302's, happy memories. Although i don't remember them bei...

They're also diagrammed on a few services out to Rochester and Gillingham. There's usually a couple at Rochester forming a service to Bedford when I pass through there in the mornings.

Class 159 as they are probably the most comfortable DMU in the UK. Class 123 as it was the closest the DMU world got to a Class 309.

Re: SWT 159 operations

I think it varies to be honest, dependent on time of day and probably time of year. When I've travelled to Salisbury, sometimes they've detached and terminated a unit at Salisbury, but other times it has run through. I have seen 10 car formations made up of 2x158 and 2x159 too, I think this is only ...

Re: Dynamic brakes

The Class 50s were originally fitted with rheostatic brakes, but this equipment was removed when they were refurbished.
