Re: End of class 421s on Lymington branch?

EMT also has one of SWT's units. The timetable recast on the Waterloo - Exeter line will take place this December thanks to a new passing loop at Axminster which will allow the service to become hourly, its currently 2 hourly or there abouts. Therefore SWT will no longer serve anywhere west of Exete...

Re: Have you ever thought you were in the mire ?

A brave decision there mpeffers! I remember I was approaching an S-Bend on a hired bike at a campsite far too fast once and found I wasn't going to make it so decided to cut the bend and risk going across the long grass. It would have been a brilliant idea had there not been a large rock hiding in t...

Re: Grumpy Old Men - again

How is charging £20 to see a doctor not breach[ing] the values of the NHS [/b]? The NHS's website states: good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth – and that principle remains at its core [/b]. Although right after this it says With the exception of charges for some prescript...

Re: The aesthetic thread aka "Fugly"

The engines will be GE J616 which although proven are only proven as natural gas engines (the train ones will be diesel  ) starting static generators and will be 4-stoke.

Has Hornby got this 153 wrong...?

Browsing Hattons website I noticed 153374 in EMT livery and took a look, but the photo provided clearly shows 2 central door locking lights on the body side. http://www.hattons.co.uk/images/products/R2792X_1.jpg Yet the real thing only has 1 http://www.mrt-railcargroup.co.uk/100_0395W.jpg Is this wr...

http://www.hattons.co.uk/productList/ca ... t.asp?c=41 is pretty good as far as I know although the other website looked pretty good value for some stuff!

Re: End of class 421s on Lymington branch?

Pretty much what Yorkie said above regarding reliability comments and electric trains are proven to be greener. However electric trains do have the additional cost of the OHLE or 3rd rail which obviously increases maintenance costs, this may well be outweighed by the reduced wear and tear on the tra...

Re: Have you ever thought you were in the mire ?

After a long day hiking we felt like cooling off in a river, however as we were driving a huge thunderstorm struck and we were forced to pull over for 20minutes/half an hour as it wasn't safe to drive. Ignoring the fact that so many centimetres of rain had fallen in the last 30 minutes we felt swimm...

Re: End of class 421s on Lymington branch?

I wouldn't say a 158's or a 159's exhaust smells particually and even if it did I doubt you'd be able to smell it far the the railway.

Re: Grand Central Class 180

It actually doesn't look quite like the link up there it has an orange stripe that starts down at bottom at the front that sweeps over (like half an arch) and then runs straight about half way up the coach side. Looks okay, would like to see the inside and I do hope they get the reliability right be...

Sounds like a very expensive mess to me that will be passed on to their currently loyal passenger base. Thanks for the post though. :D

Re: The aesthetic thread aka "Fugly"

Only the Yanks could design a loco that ugly  But not even the yanks' locos look that bad. I was wondering if the headlight clusters double up as 'over-riding' protection, I/E if two locos were together in a crash they'd interlock stopping one loco going over the other. Although I doubt they'...

Re: 30p2p

On Italian main train stations expect to pay 80 cents (around 75p) to go to the toilet so perhaps we're not doing so bad. I agree it’s a shame they should bring in a charge but if its Chilterns way of getting around eye-watering fare rises or even saving a job then so be it. Who knows may be in a fe...

£30bn shortfall threatens rail and road plans

Although speculation it appears there may be budget cuts well before the elections next year. I've had an inkling that the HSL is a very easy target but it would be a shame to see a national electrification scheme get binned, although saying this its not even approved yet. I think the most alarming ...

Re: NXEC to be taken into public ownership

This is certainly worth a read, looks like Nax Ex gets off pretty much scott free. http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/thereporters/robertpeston/2009/07/i_could_operate_trains.html Like all rail franchises, NXEC [National Express East Coast] is a special purpose vehicle, set up to meet the DfT's requirement ...
