Depends. Some are harder then others. Basically the decoder has to be wired between the motor and the track pickup. The Hornby HST souldn't be too hard. It would be possible to create steam era activities using Mid East Plus (soon to be released)

The timeframe is baised around the early 70's so it won't look out of place with steam power.

What you need to do is download the Microsoft Patch from:

http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsimulator/

The site has changed down the bottom of the page are three links to download the patch (choose the english one :D )

That should sort you out so you can add the bin patch.

There are full fitting instructions with all of SWD decoders.

I've fitted sound to a class 20 and 37. The 20 was the hardest but I just followed the instructions.

SWD will advise you on the best choise of speeker etc.
