Re: Passengers start sending Sardines to EMT...
I don't think it's a convincing argument for nationalisation, unless you hold the dogmatic belief that railways should be nationalised. BR precipitated the almost 100% MU situation, which essentially eliminates the idea that you can add vehicles cheaply. Nor do I think that it shows that the railway...

Re: Over-charged at station?
I hope you were joking about being "desperate" for the drink... (I have an alcoholic friend, and it's pretty tragic) I also doubt that you could get a walk-up far on a flight to Europe that was under £200 for 2 people. I agree that it's an awful lot of money for the journey, but if you're travelling...

Re: Class 158
The info Dave gave in his reply is only partly correct. FGW have some 3 car class 158s that are formed as he said, i.e. of 3 Driving Carriages, but they were originally 2 car sets that have been stengthened by adding Driving coaches from other now disbanded sets. Some class 158s were delivered as s...

I think the days of locos in this country are over... Can class 92s be included on the list? they are built to run in both the UK and France, even if the french aren't keen on them running south of Calais, I think it was originally the idea that they would... Also, we have showed our love to the Ara...

Re: Always enjoy travelling facing forward?
Seems rather unnecessary... But I prefer to face backwards (I think this is because I travel east in the morning and west in the evening, so if I'm facing backwards I'm not staring at the sun at the relevant times of year).
I'd settle for windows which line up with the seats...

Re: Thameslink Programme Please Read
A second set of tracks from Farringdon to Moorgate probably would probably help the LU operations in some ways. Cutting the H&C back to Aldgate would be counter productive, as there would then be no service from Aldgate East to Liverpool St - it's not a particularly long walk, but direct trains are ...

Re: Thameslink Programme Please Read
There was a South to East curve many moons ago. I think it's used as a car park or something now. Reinstating it wouldn't be a winner though, as the whole point of the Thameslink program is to get 24 trains per hour through the St Pancras - Blackfriars section. Adding a flat junction with the inevit...

Not sure what you're referring to (MSTS route?), but Goonbarrow is the only loop between St Blazey and Newquay now. Of course, if you're trying to shoe-horn modern operations onto a 1930s track plan things will be a bit different!

Re: Newquay Branch in summer
There's a loop at Goonbarrow Junction (just south/east or Bugle station) where trains pass in the summer. I've seen a photo of 2 HSTs there, complete with the LQ semaphores...

Re: Dundee to Bristol Permitted Routes
All of those routes you suggest are basically ECML or WCML. Both ought to be fine I'd guess.
You might be able to fit in Carlisle - Newcastle, or Carlisle - Leeds one way or the other.

Re: class 458 routes?
When they were brand new they did Alton & Basingstoke, but I haven't seen them down that way in many a year. I think they are basically restricted to the Windsor lines (i.e. those through P3-6 at Clapham) now.

Re: £3000 to spare ?
I think it is about the maximum (non-London) student loan for a year. I think there's another £1k on the "means tested" bit. When I was a student I could never work out how so many of those around me could go out drinking all the time. I didn't have anything like enough money - and my parents were v...

Re: John Peel
Repeat usage of names is pretty common - I think all the 45 names were recycled from Royal Scots, and I think some (if not most/all) 50s were repeats of 42/43s. Also some of the original (good!) 60 names were recycled from 44s... Not sure how many times a name has been carried by two things at the s...

Re: How long would you expect these trips to take HST style?
It would depend on the line speed to a large extent. 100 miles with 6 stops is about 17 miles between stops, and with the acceleration and slowing I reckon the best you could hope for is an average of 60mph, which would be 1h40. 600 miles with 16 stops would allow much longer between stations, so if...
