Re: On This Day In History
A 50+ year working life? That wasn't really that common was it? I was under the impression that 9Fs were designed to last until the late 80s/ early 90s.

Normally I can't stand any of the rubbish that came out of Swindon, but the noise produced by a pair of maybachs means that it can only be D1015...

Re: What trains run on your local line?
Well this is a largely pointless thread.
Basingstoke - SWT desiros & 159s, XC stuff, 59s, 60s & 66s on freights, FGW 16x units. And I'm always at work in London, but we get loads of charters & specials which can be just about anything. The anti-leaf trains and de-icers are those MPV things I think.

Re: Length of Commercial Routes
As a consumer, I have the choice to either purchase a product or not. And clearly Fallout 3 will sell many, many more copies than the RS version of the Central Wales route. But to me, as a consumer, the playing time available from Fallout 3 will make it a better investment (from my very limited spar...

Re: Length of Commercial Routes
Well I for one am finding RS is too expensive a habit for me. To use the 158 as an example, there is no way I can justify £13 for one train, no matter how good it is (and to take full advantage of the modelling/ texturing I would have to upgrade my computer). At that price I'd need to sell my guitar...

Re: The Nightmare Happened
I think the current normal approach is to provide electronic controls on the "accessible" toilets, and manual types on the broom-cupboard toilets. That's certainly how it is on all SWT trains that I've used the toilets on, and likewise on NXEC trains. The only other one I know much about is XC, and ...

Re: National Rail Timetable
There were many alphanumeric route codes when they were introduced, I think aside from thameslink they were for freight purposes (2A being Waterloo - Poole perishables, I think - from a book I have at home, I don't just know that...)

Re: Passengers sending Sardines to EMT - Other routes update p2
NXEC trains will be HSTs (unless they get some other trains from somewhere - guess some 180s might be knocking around). They will be all stations (from NXEC point of view) into London, but that's still only 4 stops, so they should be pretty quick. If you're going to abolish the current station and p...

Re: Passengers sending Sardines to EMT - Other routes update p2
I'm not very familiar with Lincoln, but didn't it have avoiding lines until BR closed them? I suspect that the consequent re-routing of trains that previously ran via these through the main station is what's behind the constraints at the existing station. I'm also pretty sure that BR (there they are...

Re: Passengers sending Sardines to EMT - Other routes update p2
Well, if you look at Northern - there are loads of trains which leave passengers on the platform (therefore those trains are too small), yet they get a big subsidy. Chances are the over-full trains aren't in need of subsidy, but it does indicate that a lot of their trains/ routes are eating the subs...

Re: Passengers sending Sardines to EMT - Other routes update p2
If you want a zero government subsidy system, then chances are there will be plenty of line closures. I doubt much would be left apart from the arterial routes and the L&SE suburban lines.
Maybe that's what needs to happen... (not my opinion, though!)

Re: plymouth - tavistock reopening?
I don't know if the idea has got beyond the world of dreams, but if it ever does then the route will be the old Southern line from Bere Alston.
The trains will probably be the ACLGs AL1-5s with GWR clerestory coaches.
