For me, Terrain tool crashes RE all the time. I've learnt to live with it by saving changes frequently (CTRL-S) and only work on terrain in the current RE window, avoid changing the RE view whilst the terrain tool is selected. I have no idea what causes it. I thought it had something to do with dens...

As a model building novice I have had a similar experience and I think you have two problems. Firstly your heirarchy needs to be right, so as previously suggested by cua193, read the heirarchy tutorial. Secondly, if you have a part or polygon selected when you export it can cause the type of problem...
