The boiler fitted on scotsman at this present time is an A4 boiler, you can tell this by the longer combustion chamber.

Interesting thought on gauge frames, some loco's have sleeves fitted to either show a lower or higher water level and also gauge glass legths vary also, so don't take 6.625 length as the only size of glass.

It's interesting that you should say about some tyres being thick and some thin as there is considerable difference in diameter of worn tyres in relation to new.

Not all A3's were flush riveted so I suppose it all depended what the original builder was going to call it

Yep! My A4 weighs in at 220lbs with half a glass showing, do yourself a favour and make a carrying frame with fork candles,OOPs! four handles. You can also use it to safely stand the engine on end, makes life easy when doing maintenance. Stick to it and hope to see you and it at Gilling next year. L...

Look! the whole purpose of a steam test is to eliminate leaks before the boiler is fitted to the chassis where it is more difficult to caulk stays or rivets, this is a normal progression, the n when it's fitted it will be all Go.

yes , the reason for steaming is to de-stress the welds and also to ensure there's no leaks at places that cannot be got at when the boiler is on the frames. We could possibly be re- wheeling 45428 next week as well if all goes well.
