The first mainline units with rheostatic braking were the PEPs (prototype electop pnumatic) which were the prototypes for the 313, 314, 315, 507 and 508. The 'PEP's were originally christened 'PER' (Prototype Electro- Rheostatic ) But someone at Southern Region HQ didn't like that, and the marketin...

Tadpole.... someone was on about that saturday..... Its some sort of hastings diesel mixed with CEP trailors or something aint it? A 'Tadpole' (3R) unit was a 'Hastings' gauge 6S power car and trailer second coupled with a 2EPB driving trailer. The difference in coach width gave the units their nic...

Can I have a 6-PUL? I have many happy memories of traveling in them to Hastings And trying to drink a cup of tea. At 60 mph the ride was usually rather exciting. :o nn :D No chance... they've all gone now. I agree with the ride comment thought. My experiences on the similar 5BEL stock when trying t...

Re: Southern electric preservation
I am interested to see what sort of southern electric unit people think should be made a priority for preservation. I am currently working with the EPB preservation group, who are restoring a MLV {001} and 2EPB {5759}. They also plan to preserve a 4BEP unit {2325}. The Southern electric group are c...

The 6PUL and later 6 PAN sets (with a pantry car) were used on the line to Bournemouth - a much more salubrious place than brighton IMHO. Although my reliable sources inform me that the 6 PUL sets were actually built for the Brighton electrification in 1933 - so I'm not far off! Mike You were corre...

I'm glad someone else has at last commented that the original 4CORS were used as the mainstay of the Waterloo - Portsmouth line. They were numbered ih the 30xx range and nicknamed "Nelson" stock, having only one window at the front of each cab, (the route indicator being in place of the window), an...

A) When choosing a seat try to find out under which seat they've put the black box... The don't put it under a seat. It's usually at the back, near the 'waste receptacle' for the toilets (and that's probably got something to do with the 'never knowingly reverse... bit). Most black boxes (actually t...

Oh God not this hoary old chestnut again. And my what short memories railway enthusiasts have. Now, fast forward in time to the 1930's. The Southern Railway decides it's shareholders interests are best served by electrification, but at the cheapest cost possible. It also wants to increase trade, an...

Must be from the strategic reserve! Seriously, these are the best trains. I dream of a manky old 47 instead of the same old 321 drawing up. That would be heaven. I once had a class 15 and a rake of maroon mark1s take me from shenfield to Liverpool Street, and that sounded like a bag of spanners too...

I'm sure I can't be the only one interested in this add-on pack! No, I am too, and in an 'East Coastway Route' pack (Keymer Junction & Brighton to Lewes, then on to Eastbourne and Hastings/Ore. Plus the Newhaven/Seaford branch) too. Please! :) Thats what I'm making 8) Allow me to worship at your fe...

Looking good there. Are you doing the Caterham branch as well to go with when Tat branch? When did the 73's do the Newspapers? That's a Class 71 in the pictures. Class 73s did the Parcels and Newspapers runs down the Central section. Once the Class 71 is done then it's a very small step to a Class ...
