Re: Slow Speed manovours.
Kromaatikse, Thankyou for that very detailed explanation on the subject. You should Wiki that reply. :) There is nothing about it on the 'tinterweb, and it's a very interesting subject IMO. :) Yes, on slide valves would have thought it was possible. There is a good valve simulator on the web, it's v...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
Wow, thanks for all that AndiS, Very helpful. Yes, Smashed between Tender and firebox bulkhead is not a pleasant way to go!! Trouble is as soon as I edit that value, the handbrake stops working. The "/" no longer works.... it only works when I set it back to 10000. The Handbrake does snap on a bit a...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
I don't know about (piston) valves, but I know that it was used all the time in the early day, when there were only sliders. There are numerous mentions that it is bad practice to use it with long trains. But for emergency stopping, it was usual practice. And there was an accident where the driver ...

Hello BigBenB5051, Just noticed you are just down the road from me.. :) Did you pop along the other day to see Nunney Castle and the King go through Chippenham Double Headed? Matt No I didn't see it mate... I was on it! I work with Nunney so where ever she goes, I go! :D You lucky so and so... :) H...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
If you want to drive them like they would have been, you need two physics tweaks. 1) A direct brake engine brake. No matter whether it would be a handbrake (with gradual control, worked from the cab), or a steam brake or some special arrangement for vacuum or airbrake (there were some), in RW, I gu...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
It also seems from early texts, that the counter steam braking method heats up the metal components. Some loco's made use of a water injection system to get around this. Not sure how my Black 5 would have copped though! Tried again on the brakes last night.. Got better with the control, but shunting...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
Yes, that is a very valid point, but sadely a limitation of the "Home Simulator". The technique I learned yesterday has a special name.. It's called "Countersteam Braking". It's written about by some German guy, who goes on to explain that this manouver can only be carried out wih Piston Valves but ...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
Sad as though it may seem, I try to go out my way to drive without F4, or F5... Lets face it real Drivers don't have a "steam generation rate" guage in a floaty window. After a re-think, I'll keep doing what I'm doing. Esp as examples have been cited from texts. Using the Reverser below 10MPH I woul...

Re: Slow Speed manovours.
I do, actually, I do have a lot of fun around Acton with that.. :) Though with the 08, I shut the throttle, switch it to Reverse, and slowly wind the throttle open again... only a bit mind, I never really open it up past a 1/4 open. Just engough to provide controllable slowing down.... But I gather ...
