Tried it on the Swansea- Carmarthen route; Works perfectly :D
Moving on to the more complex Bala Hub, I'm gettting a FSUTIL Path/ File Access Error. (Occurs on GM-Rutvil.ace)

Hi Chris,
Just tried Mike's extra function on a copy of Bala hub - and it's fine :)
Remember that at this stage it is hardlinking textures and shapes from the default routes only (that you have moved into the <common> folder with RouteRiter), and I can't find GM-Rutvil.ace in them. I don't have it in any of the 38 routes installed on my system :-?
My advice would be to find the file and copy it back into your route.

I have uploaded a later v6.2.59 to my site which copies all of the route files to Common, unfortunately I have noticed a problem today, so please do not use it yet.

The problem is that it overwrites the files already in Common\Textures so the version of Acleantrack1.ace is the one from the last route you copied. This may not be desirable.

Unfortunately xcopy does not have a flag for 'do not copy if the file exists' I will rewrite this option checking beforehand for the existance of a file and not overwrite if one is there.

As for the Fsutil error above, I believe this will only happen if there is something wrong with the file in the Common folder, if it is not there, then no hard link will be attempted.

Don't worry; Seems to be my fault- I've copied all Bala Hub's files into the common files folder as well :D

SUPER BUMP :D

After quite a long time away from MSTS, I've revisited the issues mentioned in this thread - and wish to update any newbies.

Using the Hardlink feature in Mike's RouteRiter on an NT file system [NTFS] under Windows XP, I have saved about 3.5 GB of space in a routes folder containing 36 routes. I have found no major effects on performance so far, but common sense dictates that you should have a fairly standard and healthy MSTS installation before doing this. Also, if using the excellent Trainstore utility, you should unstore routes before hardlinking (so that RR can "see" them), then re-store routes afterwards.

If disk space is at a premium it's definitely an effective means of reducing MSTS's massive "footprint" - so thanks to Greg [gregp] for suggesting hardlinks way back in 2005 & Mike for having the knowledge to write the commands into RR.
cheers,
