Route-Riter v6 Beta

The MSTS 1 Route Editor can be a beast to use, but it's capable of some amazing results, here you can talk with the wizards that are building some of the fantastic routes available and learn how to make your own.

Route-Riter v6 Beta

Postby mikesimpson on Fri Aug 20, 2004 4:38 am

I have placed a RR v6 beta on one of my sites for those who might wish to try it out. Comments on any problems will be welcomed.

New to this version:-

1. 'Check Route' now looks through all installed routes (including those
saved with Trainstore) for missing files, and if it finds a file with
the same name as a missing file, will substitute it if requested.

2. MakeAce has been replaced with AceIt by Scott Miller (an AceIt help file is
included). This file has the same options as MakeAce, along with several
improvements including the ability to handle 1024*1024 files, and to add
mip-maps to texture files.

3. TGATools2a is included with this package - This is a replacement for
TGATools2 which works with the above AceIt rather than MakeAce, kindly
supplied by Martin Wright.

4. TsUtils by Carl-Heinz is also included in this package. This is a suite
of Java utilities for MSTS and I have added options in Route-Riter to
enable use of some of the utilities. Your system should have a Java Runtime
Environment installed before installing this version of Route-Riter - You
can download one from http://www.java.com/en site - Click on the Get It NOw
button and it will be automatically installed on your system (if Java is
already installed, you will be sent to a screen which says 'Java Software
Installed')

TsUtils are placed in the Route_Riter\TsUtil folder, and there are help
files in English and German in that folder. See TSUTils_English.txt for
descriptions of the utilities included, most of these have been reduced
to a single button entry in Route_Riter.

Most useful of these are:-
a. Route Integrity Check - This option checks items such as the local
tsection.dat, route.tdb and .rdb files etc for errors, and some cases
offers suggestions for corrections. (This option should always be run
before any of the other options are run, as if errors are found then
the other options may fail)
b. Move a route - This option will move a route by a given number of
squares east/west and north/south - e.g. to avoid the great white void error
c. Change a route's altitude

Other options are fairly technical but can be used to update local tsection.dat
files against a new global tsection.dat etc

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS BEFORE TRYING ANY OF THEM.

Please direct any queries about any of the above programs to me, as they
have all been included as a courtesy by their authors, and I do not wish
to add to their workload by involving them in a lot of emails. If there is
something I can not answer, then I will pass the query to the appropriate
person.

TsUtils is great - I was just in the process of writing something to do the same job myself, saved me a bunch of work and I can get on with actually fixing the route(s) now :)

Is there any documentation on how to rectify the errors? I've understood many of them but the one about reference counts in the track database has me confused.

Thanks!

How "early" is this? Is it safe to overwrite the previous v5.* version and have all previous RR functions available?

Hi
I've installed it to its own folder....and everything appears to be working OK.(but I've obviously not tested many of RRs functions yet)
The only file that didn't install to the same folder was "aceit.exe"....but I copied the exe file from the folder which it had created...and RR seems happy now.

Hi David,

RR can be installed more than once, so no problem there except that when it exits it saves the last Route checked and the MSTS path, so if you change it in one version, it changes in them all.

Hi Matt,

The version of TsUtils included with RR is the very latest version from Carl-Heinz, however, he just sent me another one this morning with a bug fixed.

The Tsutils_english.txt file in this package is my attempt at translating the original German into English using Google - then going through the whole thing to try to make sense of it all. Some concepts are beyond my ancient mind :-)

I have not worked out how to fix the errors he gives as Reference counts, as I can not find a 1 or 2 to change?

I have however been able to work out where errors were an a route.tdb and local tsection.dat file using the Integrity check option.

I will ask Carl-Heinz about the Reference count errors, but he is off on holiday today, for a couple of weeks.

Many thanks Mike,

I've corrected loads of errors reported in Highworth so far, but there are still plenty more to go - several pages worth of these reference count errors for example, so once he's back and we can work out what needs to be done that'll be one more step along the way :)

Hi Mike
I'm amazed by your work rate with this utility.
It just gets better and better.
I sure hope that somewhere along the way you receive some financial return on this work. In the meantime please accept grateful thanks from this member of the train sim fraternity which I am sure will be echoed by the hundreds who use this freeware gift.
Cheers

I just installed it, and got a warning that one of my system files had been overwritten - had to dig out my XP disk to get it back.

Starting route-riter I get an error "run time error 457". "This key is already accociated with an element of this collection"

OKing it , RR starts - it doesn't seem to be able to find my MSTS folder from the registry, nor does it let me change to drive D to find it myself. Files|msts path does nothing. Even the quit button does nothing.

Is this all related to the dll that was replaced?

because XP told me so - said it was an unknown version and would break my system unless I restored the original immediately!

Or words to that effect

Hmm.......interesting......as I installed it yesterday.....I'm on XP pro......didn't get any messages.......but I do have auto update from microsoft switched on?
As I understand (very little) Dynamic Link Libraries Dll files are similar to drivers...and get updated by new programmes...a bit similar to tsection...so long as the new one has all the original information in it...plus the new information it should work correctly.....but obviously if you overight the new version with an old version...then any programme requiring the newer version will not work.
