Route Building Challenge

Postby Acorncomputer on Fri Oct 09, 2009 9:37 pm

EDIT 10th October 2009 - I have changed the topic name from Route Building Competition to Route Building Challenge

Hi all

In between finishing one route, getting started on another and finding time to moan about Steam, I have come up with another brilliant idea

Inspired by the battle between Derek and Sly to build locos in record time, I think there is a great opportunity to run a slightly less intense competition to build ten new routes in one week.

The idea would be for about ten experienced route builders currently working on routes for RailWorks to stop for a week and have a go at building a new route from scratch over a period of a week. There would be a basic specification for the route which would include the requirement to create a new route template, loading screen and description, use of default assets only, about 5 miles long, at least one yard, three stations, etc, etc, Each builder would start a thread for their route and post shots of progress and also be required to answer questions from UKTS members so that others can learn from the project.

With a little persuasion, I am sure that some prizes could be found from interested parties for the best routes and the idea is that all routes would be uploaded to the UKTS library after checking and tweaking.

The finished articles need to be of a good standard so the ten or so builders need to be quite experienced and willing to set aside a week of their spare time to do this.

I am happy to do the organisation and will ensure that the event does not clash with anything else such as the RS.com charity project in December.

If you are interested then please post to this thread first -

Interested.

The biggest prize of all will be what is available to download at the end of it.

Interesting idea...

How about winning route gets included into default RW on steam for everyone and the winner gets a shed load of official addons?

Just a thought, Tim/Paul, if you reading this I've only had a few small glasses of glenmorangie.

Very generous Derek. Remind me to send you another bottle of Glenmorangie to go with the one I sent you before.

I think this would be good for route builders as well. We often work long hours in isolation and it would be a great experience to work alongside others for a week to exchange ideas and techniques. I still think the best route for RailWorks will eventually come from a group effort and I always have this idea in mind.

Thanks Darpor, a good start.

I agree with this idea, and it seems it will benefit the community very well.
Heck, I might even join in! :D

Thanks for your support.

There are two of us signed up already (no backing out now Darpor) and to me that makes it an event that is definitely going to happen. I will start drawing up some practical guidelines which I will keep as simple as possible and when a few more people give a definite backing to this, we can work out the best week to choose.

Perhaps you loco and rolling stock builders can organise something similar so that there is some brand new stock to run on these brand new routes :D

Of course not Geoff, looking forward to it although again, I won't really see it as a competition when the end result will be of huge benefit to the community. Who knows, some of the projects may evolve even further over time.

As you say Darren, just about everyone will benefit from something like this but prizes for the best one will be added incentive and the icing on the cake for the winner. By the way, I will be the sole judge. (No that is not true, I think we may put it to a suitably selected panel).

Wouldn't that make you unable to participate in this?

This contest would go on for what, a week, a day, a month?

Sorry I thought it said it may last one week, now all that matters is what week that would be.
