Modular Assets

Postby RSderek on Sat Nov 21, 2009 11:28 am

Hi,
I noticed the creative use of assets (as only default ones could be used)
Which made me think about which assets could be split up and be made modular.
I know Vern and a few others have often talked about this.
So feel free to make a list of core assets you'd like to see split up to create new ones.

I'm not really talking about making 'new' assets, as that takes much longer than getting a model and splitting it.
These we will look to add to core as new updates are pushed out through steam so that everyone has them.

regards

Derek

Hi

Good idea.

I'd like to kick off with a request to split up the footbridges if possible, perhaps with one asset for the stairs and one for the walkway part?

Cheers

Excellent idea Derek.
I have posted a few thoughts on the 'afterthoughts' thread about the opposite idea - grouping.
Anything possible here?

Thanks,
K

Remember that big moan i had about the engine shed :) Joined onto the depot building :)

Perhaps we can start of with that if possoble....

Grouped assets is a complete failure it limits what is possoble.

I myself would like to see the 2 Paddington and Newcastle roofs be split so i can add my own platforms.

Actually TBH we dont have any roofs at all for RW so i wish for some to be converted.Or evan made :)

Hi overmarze,

That is the IOW and I will not be splitting it at this time.

Grouped assets were not a failer as far as I am concerned, they did what they were suppose to do. They are grouped to keep draw calls down, easy of placement for the RS.com route builder and for shadow baking.
However, for the route builders out there I can see that you'd like to have as much as you can modular, and we did try as best we could.

yep, those are 2 good examples.

With regards to the station roofs, I's take a section and make a number of variations.

keep them coming.

In agreement that the "Grouped Assets" are actually handy, especially with my recent 'Upndown' route, as I wouldn't have been able to fill in such expanses of open land.. :D

The keeping 'Draw Calls Down' is very important to users of lower spec computers, as it reduces load on both CPU and GPU meaning that more important things like AI can get a better priority.

I'm actually thinking these days that the AI does work in Railworks, but it's mostly due to a lack of processing power on some of our computers which is causing some of the issues... I wonder how Railworks will fare in a few years time? perhaps the AI will improve without any real code tinkering (sorry going off on a tangent)

Some station roofs would be handy, as would some of the modern engine sheds (4 lane ones) being cut down or increased to 3's, 2's and 5's, 6's, 7's, etc..
I really lacked some structures for a 'Depot'.

The main thing at this time is the stations, whether the buildings can be split down into subsets, thinking all the large default stations on both the UK routes as and when time permits.

Not strictly within the original remit but one thing we do need (whether from RS.com or third party) is a set of station signs, maybe modern BR and period BR in regional colours, that can be renamed within the route editor rather than having to create individual signs in 3D Canvas. It's not that it's an onerous task, just time consuming having to import especially when you have half a dozen or more stations to name.

That would be a nice Xmas present!

Maybe not quite on subject, but I still think important, and I would have thought quite quick to do,more modern colour light signals rather then the originals, which look 30 years old.

I think that one is being worked on but it really would be a great feature for all route builders of all abilities.

I like the sound of this thread!

Along with others on here my first request would be for the stations and in particular the overall roofs, 'sectioning' them sounds ideal. I'd also like to see the two cement plants split up - I can see some of the pipework etc might not be of use but the buildings and conveyors etc would be great, same could be done with the quarry complex?

Can I also just second what Keith said up above - actual grouping of assets which I think is a great idea too. Could it work like creating a consist, ie click and ctrl to select the assets, click a 'group' button, click the grey cube, give it a name and it's added to a list..
