Questions from Challengers

Postby Acorncomputer on Fri Nov 13, 2009 6:32 pm

As we get nearer to the start of this Challenge I have started this thread so that if Challengers have any questions, they can be posted here and hopefully picked up quite quickly.

Good luck to everyone.

Big problems already.

I have created my template as I always do, obviously it is the same way that Geoff has advised. In the past, they have worked fine but I have just created my Lake Ruchwil template, everything absolutely fine at my end, terrain raises, everything seems perfect. But I sent it to someone to test the bare .rwp because I had encountered previous problems and it wont load on their system.

Any ideas?

Hi

If you have created your own route template then you will need to include you own asset folder with the route when you pack it up. Have you done this?

Hi

Post when you want to and strike a balance between building and posting so that you do not get held up too much.

Good question Ross and it's something that I had to wrap my noggin around as well. As with most of the signals in RW i'm not exactly sure how they were intended to work. What I've done is use Entry signals at the start of the siding and Exit on the siding tracks. Take a very simple siding as an example, where 1 track becomes 2. I used the entry swith for the train coming towards the switch, the train then has a chose, continue strait or throw the swith and go into the siding. This is my entry switch and will show red for allowing the train to continue on the main and white to go into the siding. Now coming from the other direction I've place two exit signals before the switch the logic being, if the exit signal is read on the siding the switch is not thrown and you need to throw it before leaving the siding. On the mainline the loging being if it's red it means the switch is thrown for the siding and not for continuing on the main line, thus it must be thrown.
I hope this helps a bit, but as I said I myself am not fully sure exactly how the RW team designed the signals to work.

James.

I found that I also had to refresh my memory on how the exit and entry signals work for my route. There is an excellent description of the functions and use of the different signals in Mark Brinton's two documents which were done for Railsimulator. The documents are equally applicable to RailWorks. The library file references are File ID : 17690 and File ID : 17957.

Hi

Just a point. I found some time ago that the default shunt entry/exit signals did not work correctly but this may have been fixed by now. I found that an 'ordinary' signal worked for entry to the yard and the Shunt Signal Exit Preparing worked on the exit from the yard. If you have problems you could try this combination.
