Challenge - The Churchwood and Midland Line

Postby jamesh on Thu Nov 12, 2009 3:29 am

I suppose time's running out before the competition officially starts and that means it's time to make up my mind and enter the competition. 8) So that's it I'm in. Before I go any further I must commend Geoff for putting together this challenge and say what a great idea it is as it will no doubt give railworks users some great little routes to play around on thus generating interest in the program.
My other reason for thanking Geoff is that's it's given me the motivation to get off my duff and put the past year and a half aside and start being involved in train-simulations again. :D I'd forgotten how much satisfaction I get out of these programs and route building till I read Geoff's post and decided it was time to take a closer look at RW and learn a little more about it. As such I've spent the last couple of weeks delving into content creation and and route building in order too see exactly what RW can do and for the most part I'm impressed.
On the weekend I started a Micro route as a test bed and am including some pictures below. The micro route was essentially a test bed for the challenge so I could try out various methods of doing things before starting the challenge on Friday night.

http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/yard.jpg

http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/fields.jpg

http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/2ndyard.jpg

The micro route basically uses the same rules as the route that I'm going to enter in the challenge. So here it is, the Challenge Route Proposal;

The Churchwood and Midland Line

The route will be a fictional one set in the years following the creation of British Rail and will run from the former GWR town of Churchwood to the former LMS town of Midland Junction. The length of the route has yet to be determined but I'm going to aim for 8-10 miles between the two stations so that passenger trains will be able to get up a decent amount of speed.
The route will use STRM data which should help create a realistic looking counrty side and will also mean the track gradients will vary. This should also allow for some nice rolling counrtyside. The track between the two main stations will be double tracked and there will be a spur leading to an old coal mine. There will be a main yard at the terminus which will allow for a variety of activities including fueling and shunting. The yard at the other main station will smaller, but will also have a turntable, fuel point and coaling point.
The mainline will be double tracked and as the route will be set in the early BR era will have semaphore signals and other scenery items set around the time period. (1950's to 1960's) I'm hoping that by doing this the route will swing both ways and allow it to be used by both steam and diesel fans.
The premise of the route (history) is going to be that the town of Midland Junction was an old Midland/LMS town several miles from the GWR town of Churchwood, however as the size and importance of Midland Junction grew so did the GWR's desire to expand into the town. After several years of failed attempts by the GWR to expand into the town and build it's own station, an Act of Parliment forced the Midland Railway and GWR to share the existing terminus and freight yard. As the town grew so did it's importance and traffic volumes for both railways.

More to come,

Cheers,

James.

Hi James

Welcome to the Challenge.

I can see already that the rest of us are going to have some tough competition from you :D

Just a reminder that applies to all non-UK based Challengers. The Challenge starts for UK based Challengers at 7.00 pm tomorrow (13th November) but Challengers based outside of the UK can start at 7.00 local time. This is OK and although there will be a difference in starting time between Ross in NZ and yourself of about 15 hours, this does not matter.

It's good to see more people taking up the challenge. That means more routes to drive :D.

If only I had the time available next week to have a go.

That's exactly my motivation for entering the challenge, more routes to drive and it's why Geoff's idea was so good. It doesn't really matter who wins (my competitive side says yes it does) as we all win in the long run. The more content, the more appeal there is to the simulator and the more exciting it becomes. The better the sim becomes the more people will use it and this will lead people to produce more content for it...... :o

BTW thanks for the info Geoff, I'll be starting at 7PM local time when I get home from work.

Cheers,

James.

Ok, I figured it's time to provide a little update as we are now 18 hrs into the competion. Since I decided to do a fictional route I'm finding a bit more of a challenge than a real route as you have to make things up as you go. A real route you can look at a map of Google Earth and figure out where things go and how to place them. Also with a real route I try to lay the track then roads, then scenery as this makes it a logical flow, this time however it's all a little bit experimental and this means you have improvise as you go. :( (years of Tele have ruined my imagination.)
I've got the first town in along with it's station and yard but I haven't decided yet what to call this town, Churchwood something else, I'll decide later in the week depending on how much more I've got done. Anyway here are a couple of shots of the first town;

Just down the line from the station;

A closer look at the station;

Backing up to the turntable;

The coal mine is locateda along a branch line a little further outside of town;

And finally two more shots located a ittle further down the mainline;

Tomorrow I'l try and take some shots that from the locomotive.
Cheers,
James.

So it's the end of Day 3 (my time) and things are coming along. I've got about 4 miles of track in and the scenery in place so far, 2 stations, 2 yards, 2 turntables and so on, but I've just realized something and that's that the rules state I need 3 stations so I'll be figuring something out PDQ. I've also tested some basic signaling and platform markers and so on and they all seem to be working ok so far but I'm starting to wish there was more time. I'm hoping speed signs and mileposts are fairly quick to add. I'd rather be building towards my 3rd station than trying to figure those out.
In the meantime here are some shots from day 3;

A local passenger train leaves the station;
http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/Challenge/Day3_001.jpg

Shortly afterwards a "farmers" goods train crosses the viaduct and passes through the station;
http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/Challenge/Day3_002.jpg

http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/Challenge/Day3_003.jpg

Then rolls through the countryside towards the 2nd station seen in the previous shots;

Passing the lake;

http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/Challenge/Day3_007.jpg

Must be nice to take a holiday on the local canal;
http://www.tracksideproductions.com/images/Challenge/Day3_008.jpg

I had a couple more shots that I'm not going to post yet till I fix up those areas. The nice thing about screen shots is that you notice little things you missed or want to add, so tomorrow I'm going to fix those. After that I'm going back to tackle the problem of needing 3 stations. I'm going to continue to lay tracks and scenery till the end of Wednesday evening culminating in the final station (Midland Junction), them I'm going to spend Thursday night and Friday touching things up for upload.
Stay tuned more to come,

Cheers,

James.

P.S. I there any way for Geoff, Adam, Derek or anyone else to convince my boss that I need the rest of the week off to get everything done????? :o

This is very impressive work. I sympathise with the P.S. This is the peak period of activity in my office (of which I am the Director) and I cannot afford to give myself some leave!!

I like the spacing of assets you have going on here.
Less is more in many ways.

looking forward to seeing it soon.

Thanks Derek, I have uploaded it now. (7PM my time) I find it very tricky when building a route to get the right amount of spacing between the assests. I try to make a scene look as full as possible without giving too much of a hit to performance.

As for the route it's self as I said it's now uploaded. I've got a splitting headache and spent most of the last 2 days working like a deamon to try and get everything finished. It's one of those things where the more you do the more you want to do. All told the route is about 8 miles of mainline double track and has 3 stations with 3 yards, plus the old coal mine. I'll post a little more and some screen shots when my head stops spinning.

Ok, with the challenge over, the route uploaded, and my head a little clearer I thought it might be time to post a couple more of the final shots. Since the challenge is over I was able to swap out my Black Five for a real GWR locomotive to run the final stretch and take some more screen shots, so here they are;

I hope you all enjoy the shots and I must say it's been a real challenge, but also really enjoyable. Good luck to everyone and I can't wait to drive some of the other routes.
