Rain Effects using Blender

It's what the driver sees, it's possibly more important than even how it looks on the outside - but it's the most difficult bit to build. Learn how to make your own cabs, or how to use the ones that have been produced, how to wire up the controls and much more!

Rain Effects using Blender

Postby pauldee on Wed Jan 04, 2012 9:00 pm

I would like to know wether anyone has managed to get the rain effect into models from Blender?

I have read all the posts I can find both here and on other forums. I have gone through the BigEx manual as well, yet I still have not succeeded in exporting the effect into RW. I can make glass and texture out the cab quite happily. It is just this one effect that is driving me up the wall.

The effect uses 4 textures:-
1. Glass tex ( diffuse + alpha)
2. dummy tex
3. Directional coloured tex ( diffuse + alpha normal map)
4. wipe motion tex (diffuse + alpha normal map)

I've entered TrainGlassWeatherEffects.fx into the BigEx .igs mod file and from the log file everything exports as it should. The Asset Editor then errrors on creating "xxx_nm.tgpcdx".

So if anyone knows if it is possible to acheive this effect from blender/BigEx combination I would like to hear from you.
Thanks

OK posting in here because I am using Blender and trying to get rain but to no avail

not quite getting the same result though - mine goes though fine, but I don't get windows at all at the end of it, just some weird effects:

Guess you know these tutorials which help to translate 3DSMax tutorials into equivalent Blender steps.

Just out of curiosity, are you purposely using the weathereffects shader on your external model to try and get raindrops outside? if not, the weathereffects shader goes on your cab model windows not the external ones

Ooh not seen that tutorial, I was just trying to interpret the 3DMax one - thanks very much

yeah I was aiming for a outside rain effect - don't see why only the inside should get one

Just tried it, it does work.

BUT

it will display that mirror effect until you go into cabview, after that it seems to work perfectly.

Dave

<EDIT> Not that that helps you getting it to work in blender but at least you now know it can be done </EDIT>

OK got rain effects now :D

Couple of slight issues, firstly you get the shinyness until you enter and leave the cab, then you get the rain...

secondly some windows appear to have... antigravity - the rain is flowing upwards!

One window does have slioght;y bigger raindrops too (though I think it has a different texture now I think about it)

What I did:

I named the material "weatherglass_1_ZTO"

Made sure to have wiper details added in the locomotive blueprints

For all raindrops of same size all UV islands need to have the same surface ratio like on the loco. That means that smaller window on the loco needs to be smaller window on the texture (in the same ratio regarding bigger window). Also, all windows on the texture need to be in exactly same position regarding each other, like on the loco. That solves antigravity problem.
You must know - English is not my native language.

Ahh OK thanks

I think the issue with the anti gravity could be blender seems to map some surfaces upside down

OK sorted out the anti-gravity rain, but I have increased my window texture size to 2048x2048 but the rain drops are still the same size?

OK I worked out the rain to get it a better size, but... its not right? I have increased toe size of the unwrapping and overlapped them, created fresh textures but its still using the old texture locations fro the rain :-?

Image

I have checked the Blender model, I have checked the Textures - all appear to be OK - any ideas why its not updating?

Clear cache before using new exported IGS file in Blueprint editor.
