Well, I know the names, but only have Gill Sans numerals and "Transport" which is a version of the font used as "Rail Alphabet" and also very close to the font used by the old NHS on its hospital signs have appeared as free-use fonts.
The original Gill Sans medium type was a sans-serif typeface that had been designed by Eric Gill for the LNER but was adopted by British Railways in 1949 because of its simplicity and clarity.
On the old black locos (eg. 10000, 20001 etc) the numerals were pale cream but when the first green livery appeared the numbers were yellow (like the SR electric locos). Three different "D"s were used.
In 1957 the new "Block Style" numerals appeared for modernaisation plan locos like D5500, D200 etc. I've never found this particular font online. They were 6in high and white not cream.
The Gill Sans still continued to be used though on some shunters. Indeed as late as 1961 some new shunters appeared but with a D added on the cab side in front of the number. The syle varied, on some 8in high to match the Gill sans number and on others it was shorter. Some were in the correct sans serif type whilst others had a serifed "D".
In 1964 as part of the new blue corporate livery, the Rail Alphabet appeared and the rest as they say is history. They were normally 6in high and white in colour.
Cheers
