Class 56 "Grids"

Postby Sly401 on Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:40 pm

Hi guys,
Much experimentation with texturing tecniques, plus a couple of PM's asking how things were going....... so here are a few shots

There are quite a few different methods of lighting and illumination tried out on these,as well as the obvious texture colour differences....... feedback good or bad appreciated

I personally find the first two to be the best, the others have far too much contrast in the colours.

Although I'd suggest maybe fiddling with the headlights on the first one as they look quite out of place.

Good progress though, I look forward to the finished article.

I'm no 56 fan sorry, correct me if I'm wrong...

The brown one  (image five)...Looks a bit to orange where the specular lighting is, and the same with the bogeys, apart from they look a bit bright on the fourth image.

Apart from that they look great! :D :D

Cheers,
Mike

Hi fellahs

Yep the coal sector one is heavily weathered in a sense, and I agree the contrast appears too strong on others,
Thing is they are not done in the normal way these use multi layered procedural shaders that if I can crack it means I can have a BR Blue, BR yellow etc coloured shaders that are simply dropped on to the model (split by colour) and simple sliders will set the dirt, oil, and rust amount (in the modelling program ).

A bit of work now could save hours of work on future models and also give me great consistency...

The other area of experimentation is with lighting, some use sunlight (the orange tinge on the coal sector) :-? others use HDRI dome or an array of lights.. these are really supposed to be used for photo real renders. however I get some interesting results when baking them to multiple maps.

Thanks for the comments

There is "something" strange about the windows Paul, and in 56105 - I can see straight through the cab?? :o

The colouring also, or were these taken using HDV or whatever it's called?

Br blue gets 8 out of 10 with some nice windows like the class 47 then yes i would be a buyable.

What about in the dark thay will light up like a christmas tree in the dark.
Is there any chance we can have a pic of them to compare them to the class 47 windows..

The first BR blue ones look the best so far. Calm and fits into the background well. I always feel the windows look best darker. The interior is dark usually and light windows are just reflections of the lights. I usually tweak the glass colour in my stock if I can. (see my screenshots...)

Class 50 up next?

Looking forward to seeing the final result.

Hi Guys
The shot of 105 is an old one no cab interior fitted. :D there are many bits and pieces on the models that are missing in some views..

You seem to be confused with HDRI.. If you put it on in the game as in the sky dome..... then all sorts of things like shiny windows at night will happen
That is not what I am doing

There is no HDRI running on the game

I am using HDRI among other techniques to make textures that have several maps to them.. they have
Color,Diffuse,Trans,Reflection, Enviroment,Shadow,Ambient occlusion, Bump, Alpha , 3 specular maps , specular color etc etc
The way these textures are combined can produce the range of results shown in the screens, getting the balance between channels is the "Art"
Once the texture is applied to the model.. HDRI is not used in game

what you can't see from the screenshots is the way light and reflection moves about as the model or viewpoint moves. that I see as a step forward

Cheers

Any chance of a video :D
I will admit ive seen pics from all angles thay do look a tiny bit brighter from as you look over but from the ground view thay look wrong.
If thats not possoble not saying it is or isnt as i aint got a clue but if it isnt i would rather have them dark evan from a higher view so thay match the class 47s windows.

Ive spoken to atleast 6 people tonight all agreeing that thay dont look right.
Sorry
I dunno i look at the Class 47 from RDSL the defult model and the colours of the windows stay the same no matter what were you look at the windows from. So i geuss thats what i exspect.

Perhaps you can do one with dark windows and show a comparison then do a vote?

Ok but did you know the numbers are on the wrong end?

Very much likeing what I see. I also prefer the texture on the Romanian. There's certainly lots for my imagination to work overtime with in those screenies.

BP :D
Kind regards, Paul.
If it moves, paint it BR blue.

Looking like they are progressing well but i think the paintwork on all but the Br standard livery looks wrong.
The textures on the yellow cab of the Large logo look too blotchy. The coal sector one just looks totally wrong, sorry to be blunt. Took me a bit just to figure out that the Railfreight scheme, it looks more like bronze in that first shot! There's no way a engine would get that dirty, ive never seen an engine in the US even that is that filthy.
Keep us posted, these are some badly needed models and im sure you will be ale to get these issues sorted out.
