Yes, I agree with these comments. In my view the items are built to a very high professional standard and I hope we will be able to see and appreciate more items of this quality from Paul.

Cheers and thanks!

LNWR Engine Shed Loughborough Derby Road

Hi,

I thought some of you might like to see an earlier stage of construction of a model than I've shown previously ..........so at this stage its still looking quite crude and not very life like.......

The LNWR Engine Shed at Loughborough Derby Road under early stage of construction in Google Sketchup. I need to add some detail such as guttering and pipe work and also a walled yard to the rear of the building. I think I'll also add some inspection pits at the rail entrance to the building. I've been thinking about whether or not to add interior detail. However its already a very complex model and I think an interior might be too much at present. The design of the original building helps in that much of it is of modular design - so I only need one wall and a couple of roof sections and one vent repeated many times to make whatever size shed I need, plus the workshop at the rear of the shed. In this case it is a four road shed.

The next phase will be to transfer it to 3D Studio Max for some much higher resolution screen renders with shading, followed by ambient occlusion baking and of course export to Rail Simulator !

Nice work, Are the silver bits running across the window modeled or textures?

Hi Danny,

The windows are modelled. I've decided ( for now at least ) that computers can handle polygons better than they can handle textures. So I'm trying to minimise the textures. However this means that there will be more polygons required. Despite the size of the model it curerently uses the same number of textures as the platelayers hut and significantly less textures than the signal box. I expect that I will only need a couple more textures - one of which will be the door from the platelayers hut for one of the out-buildings in a yard to the rear of the shed.

Cheers
Paul

That is an interesting and very useful observation.

It is always a trade off, but yes, more polys are better than higher res textures.
