Charnwood Forest Railway - NW Leicestershire, UK

Postby pauls on Fri Oct 17, 2008 6:00 pm

Hi,

I've no problem with buildings in Gmax and 3DS, but I've had to teach myself how to texture. Anyway here is the Charnwood Forest Railway Weighbridge that used to be at Loughborough, Derby Road, Station in North West Leicestershire , UK. This weighbridge is not a standard LNWR type. It was built by a contractor for the Charnwood Forest Railway Company. The CFR was operated by the London North Western Railway and closed to regular passenger traffic in 1931. Loughborough Derby Road closed completely in 1955 and was finally demolished in 1965. The only remaining buildings in existance now are the old goods shed and part of the old Webb Northlight Engine Shed. There are still some rails left in the sidings at the old Messengers Foundry which amazingly itself is still largely intact. The remainder of the Charnwood Forest Railay which ran to a junction near Coalville closed althogether in December 1963.

The model is probably too complex - however its only a small branch line railway so there won't be many buildings and I feel that the few that exist will be a focal point. I will of course do much simpler models for more distant none railway buildings. Many thanks to all those who have helped and given advice to help push me up my learning curve. Now I've completed a simple small model - I'll do the weighing platform itself to finish the model off , then I'll return to the more complex and difficult passenger buildings to complete them - Hopefully I can improve my texturing abilities with each model - no doubt I'll then need to work on the weighbridge again to improve it.

Cheers
Paul

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

The route will be freeware - but I've no idea of the timescale - I'm very slow working at the moment as I get used to texturing. I've now decided that I'm going to do a model of the Loughborough, Derby Road LNWR standard coaling stage next - they were sometimes known as 'coal holes' - hopefully this will improve my skills so that I can improve the passenger station buildings.

I'm hoping to do the full CFR eventually. For those who know the area it ran from Charnwood Forest Junction near Coalville / Coalville East, Whitwick, Thringstone, Grace Dieu, Shepshed, Snells Nook and finally terminated at Loughborough Derby Road - some very quaint names along the route I think !! :)

Total mileage is only about 11 statute miles. However I'm determined to build all the railway buildings per the original railway rather than using stock KRS buildings. However for the sake of time I'm going to have to use stock KRS buildings for the more distant stuff.

Cheers

Texturing is still a mystery to me also. The weightbridge does look very nice indeed so you are getting to grips with it.

BP :D
Kind regards, Paul.

Superb model, you have certainly captured the atmosphere of railway buildings!
Will you be making your models available individually?

Hi Mark,

I was thinking of releasing some of the models individually - I think the CFR Weighbridge and LNWR Coal Stage, and 4 Road LNWR Webb Northlight Engine Shed would be of general use to others . There was also a CFR Signal Box at Loughborough that again would probably be OK for general use.
I've also got to tackle a 40ft LNWR Turntable - however I daren't even think about that one working OK in KRS :)
I suppose I would keep location specific station buildings back for the route release.

I'm currently working on the LNWR Coal Stage - I'll get the Weighbridge finished as well.

I'm a bit concerned that my models are a bit too detailed for general use - My route will be a small branch line - so I don't think it'll create problems - however these models might be a bit too much for busy mainline areas ??

Cheers
Paul

Well I guess if they do cause a problem they can allways be removed in the editor. I'm sure that lots of folk will want to have them on their routes, the more buildings we have, the better! I'm sure your project will be quite something when it's complete. And the sash window........... great stuff! :D Bound to end up running late and messing up the schedule due to studying your buildings !!
