Route Wars: The Fourth Battle

Postby CaptainBazza on Thu Mar 27, 2008 1:44 am

Combat Zone: Europe:
The Hopeful Participants: The UK vs The Euros.
The Rest of the World: know there's fat chance of a local route, so are sitting on the sidelines enjoying the entertainment value.

So far:
The Brits are screaming like a wounded John Bull. The Germans are quietly plotting............From the rest of Europe, except the Swiss, sitting smugly in their chalets eating chocolate kisses, there's a low murmur of discontent....

Okay................on your marks...........

Oh wait, a thought has struck me, suddenly the Brits want to be a part of Europe!? Hmmmmm.

Cheers Bazza :evilbat:

Hopefully whatever route they choose, it'll have steam on it.

Poland. They still have one or two preserved steam lines.

Me as a German should be quietly plotting but wasn't there something like good beer, beautiful women and FAST trains?

Caught me out too, Uli, I guess he got the 'beautiful women' right, but I was stuck on the good beer and fast trains bit (third route clues).

Voting for France or Italy. :D

Some nice seaside route with grand views of Mediterranean coast and lots of traffic would be surely fantastic.

For me there are two scenic routes (my wishful thinking) which are very interesting:
1) The Albula line fron Chur to St.Moritz in Switzerland.
2) The Rhine line from Frankfurt to Koeln via Koblenz, along the right bank of river Rhine.

Well I have to admit I think I've only driven on the MSTS1 default routes half dozen times in total..........and never the Japanese route.
I love Italian, French, German routes, and especially East European/Russian routes......because they have been built later to the best standards.
Then again MSTS1 had been out a couple of years before I bought it.
USA routes have never caught up IMO, and I think I currently have only a couple installed.
Cheers

Being an Irish man, I am voting for Ireland please! I know it's very unlikely but hey, if I don't vote, it won't be considered, right! LOL!

The Waterford to Dublin route really is the dream for me. It's one I do every so oftern as a passenger, so would love to drive it. It has some truly beautiful scenery. The stop at Kilkenny seens the locomotive disconnecting and moving to the other end of the train for the continued trip, as Kilkenny is on the tail end of a piece of "Y" track, splitting north to Dublin and south to Waterford. The last few miles into Dublin itself is amazing as you pass by the Inchiecore Railyards where both new and old rail stock stand side by side, truly an sight to behold.

I know it's very unlikely it will be part of the official release, and if not, providing the route creation tools are easy to use, I'll certainly be recreating this route.

Good idea, then you'd only have to build scenery for one side of the line!

as Kilkenny is on the tail end of a piece of "Y" track,

Well Paul, how's yourself. The Kilkenny cats did fight 'til only their tails were left!

I'm also partial, on occasion, to a drop of Kilkenny brew.

Here is my guess. After their trek to the White Pass & Yukon, I am really hoping there might be some steam. My guess, for that it is worth, is maybe either Hartz Mountains narrow gauge or late 60's 01 Pacifics in the old East Germany. (would REALLY love to see steam vintage Horseshoe Curve (or Sherman Hill in that [i]other[i] sim) ~can always hope I guess...

You certainly cant go past some wonderful Weis or Schwarz beer, the woman are lovely to look at and the ICE's meet the fast train criteria.

Cheers

My thoughts: I think it likely, with Rick et. al. knowing how many railfans there are in the UK, that the fourth route will be in the UK. Rick mentioned in another thread, quote "...We pick routes that are somewhat unique and compelling in their own right..."

So my pick is the Kyle line - one of the world's most scenic rail journeys from Kyle of Lochalsh on the west coast of Scotland to Inverness on the east. (http://www.kylerailway.co.uk/, [url http://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/u ... lways.html[/url])

It's 80 miles (long enough for a good route - 2 1/2 hrs - but short enough to model), crosses an entire country (well, sort of) - has wonderful mountain & sea views, 16 stations to stop at, 29 bridges to cross...historic locos (http://www.hrsoc.org.uk/Images/Big%20Goods.jpg) and who would not want to travel to a station called "Muir of Ord"???

What's more, if you ever get tired of driving the line, you can spend many more hours learning how to correctly say the station names on the line (like Achnashellach or Lochluichart) :)

Once you've mastered that, you can (thanks to WOR) perhaps continue north all the way up to Thurso & Wick, or South down to Perth: http://www.scan.org.uk/northbywestmicro/trains/newDefault.asp 8)

OK, so my chances of being right are about nil, but it's fun to dream...
