Microsoft Train Simulator 1
The original and first of a new generation released back in 2001, redefined what people expected from a Train Simulator. It wasn't perfect, but with enough tools provided and immense support from the rapidly growing community it is still being used 6 or more years later. Developed by Kuju and published by Microsoft.

Special Interest Forums
Discussion relating to these specialised areas is NOT limited to any particular simulator. There aren't enough people/topics to balance the dilution of discussion if multiple forums are managed for each sim. It is recommended that if your topic relates to a particular sim that you prefix the title, e.g. [MSTS1] or [RS] for example.

Trainz Railway Simulator / Classics
Spanning almost as long a period of time as MSTS 1, Trainz represents an alternative approach to simulation. With much better graphics, a simplistic physics model, a far better (not even in the same ball park) route building tool and the capacity for some really powerful scenario creation, Trainz has become very popular and is still being updated.

Blender
A fantastic, very powerful and free 3D modelling tool for which you can now get a Rail Simulator export! Includes many features the pro's use that are not found in 3D Canvas like texture baking; but is a lot more tricky to use than 3D Canvas.

3D Studio Max AND Discreet GMax
GMax is now capable of making models for both Auran Trainz and Microsoft Train Simulator so you can see your work in both sims very quickly and easily now!
GMax is a sister product to the big 3D Studio Max but also has the distinct advantage of being completely free - and available for download from UKTrainSim.

A very neat looking 3D tool which may soon have the ability to export MSTS models! Well worth a look, probably the easiest tool to use to date.

Ship Simulator is a great simulator which seeks to simulate boating from small taxi craft to giant cargo ships and the Titanic. There's also the excellent Virtual Sailor for a highly realistic experience that includes wind-sailing, submarines and multiplayer!
